How to be Fearless in Your Parenting

Parenting is hard work. When you start your family they don't give you a class on how to be a parent. You are on your own to find resources or figure out how you want to parent your children.

Don't worry, everyone is in the same boat. Hopefully we can help a little.

    Learning Step-by-Step

Learning what parenting style best fits you is a process of trial and error. One important thing to remember is; if you mess up, you are not going to ruin your kid. Don't stress too much about it. Don't be afraid of making a mistake just learn from it and move on. Some days are going to be difficult but don't get discouraged, take a deep breath, and keep trying. Remember you do not have to be a perfect parent, as long as you love your kids and want the best for them you are doing just fine.

"As your kids grow they may forget what you said, but won't forget how you made them feel"

    - Kevin Heath

    Tips and Tricks

Don't get overwhelmed. I know that is easier said than done but try not to be too much in your head. Some things to help are to stop and breathe and put yourself back in the present moment. People usually get overwhelmed by all the things that they have to do. But if you focus on what you can do right now, in this moment, it helps to relieve some of that overwhelming feeling.

If you aren't sure about something there are a couple of things you can do. You can go to the internet and find parenting blogs and websites. Just find websites and blogs that fit how you want to parent. Talk to your fellow parents to see what works for them.

If you are having trouble finding other parent friends, look at this blog.

Social Media can be really helpful because you can always ask any question you might have. Even if you don't know what brand of diapers to use you can ask and get plenty of answers in no time.

    Get to Know Yourself

Alright, now get out your journal or a piece of paper and answer the following questions.

    - Did your parents ever get scared? Of what?

    - How did they view the world? Is it a scary place, a nice place, or somewhere in-between?

    - Do you remember any times as a child when you knew your parents were fearful?

    - How did you feel as a child? Protected, secure, afraid, insecure, etc...

    - What parenting techniques did your parents use?

After you answer those switch your view from your parents to yourself and see where you are at as a parent. Once you answer those questions for yourself it will be easier to see where you are at and where you want to be. You could be going in the direction you want and not need to change anything or you could have some things you want to change. If you are fearful writing down your fears and identifying them can help you overcome them and gain confidence in your parenting skills!
