  • Spring Cleaning Tips + Quiz

    March 07, 2018 5 min read 3 Comments

Spring is here which mean’s it’s time for your favorite thing: spring cleaning! Are you a cleaning pro, a basic cleaner, or the “I’ll get to it someday” type of cleaner? No matter what type of cleaner you are, we know just where you should start with your spring cleaning this year. Head on over and take the quiz, but be sure to come back for more spring cleaning tips and tricks.

Hopefully you have a pretty good idea of where to start your spring cleaning (really though, if you’re still unsure, take this quiz!) We have so many spring cleaning tips and tricks to help you make the most of your spring cleaning this year. From easy decluttering to closet hacks, these tips are sure to speed up your cleaning and make everything more efficient. Take a peek, add them to your checklist, and let’s get organized.

    Create a Gameplan

Before you start your spring cleaning regime this year, let’s plan some things out. Make a list of which rooms you want to hit, what things need repairs, and any things that need to be thrown out right off the bat. Create a simple outline or be as detailed as you need to be, but remember to prioritize, not just by the things that need to get done, but also by the things you want to do. If your garage is a wreck from the long winter but you think you’ll lose motivation halfway through the job, start somewhere else or break the big task into smaller, more attainable tasks. No one ever said you had to get it all done in one day. It’s much better to take a little longer to get your spring cleaning done than to lose motivation in the beginning.

    The Boxes

While you’re making that spring cleaning game plan, grab three boxes to bring with you from room to room. One box will be your “Trash” box, another your “Donation” box, and the third is your “Relocate” box. Your trash and donation boxes are pretty self-explanatory: anything you don’t want, need, or use anymore, will either go in your trash or donate boxes depending on the condition.

Your relocate box should be used for anything that goes in another room so that you aren’t running from room to room putting things away and losing sight of the end goal. Empty your relocate box as needed. If you want to be a little environmentally friendly about your spring cleaning this year, add a fourth box labeled “Recycling” and recycle old papers, receipts, glass, and anything else your city recycles.

    Keep It Or Toss It?

Now that you have your game plan ready and your boxes all set up, you have to decide what to keep, toss, and donate! Start by asking yourself some questions.

Does it work? You’ve found some hidden treasure stashed away in a corner of your home. If it doesn’t work, get rid of it. If you want to fix it, please do! Recycling is a three-part thing: reduce, reuse, and recycle, and fixing up a broken thing is a great way to reuse something. If you aren’t going to fix it, don’t let it sit in your house until the next time you stumble upon it. Toss it out and move on.

When did you last use it? If you haven’t used something in the last six months, ask yourself if you are going to use it in the next six months. If the answers to both of those questions are no, into the trash or donate box it goes!

How can I prepare for next year’s spring cleaning? Here’s one of our favorite spring cleaning tips you can do with clothes (and potentially DVDs and books but that might make things a little tricky). Whenever you use something in the next year, put it back in its place backwards; turn the hanger backwards to hang it back up and put the book or DVD back on the shelf facing backwards. When you go to do your spring cleaning next year, you’ll have a better idea of what you actually use in your home and what hasn’t been touched in a year.

Before you throw everything away: sleep on it! Of all the spring cleaning tips we have, this one might be the most important. If there’s something you can’t live without, you’ll know after sleeping on it and you’ll be able to rescue it before it’s too late.

    Little Spring Cleaning Tips

    1. Start small, but make a big impact. Before committing to an entire deep-clean, declutter session of your house, start small with more manageable projects that will make you feel accomplished and give you the energy to tackle the bigger tasks.

    2. Declutter flat surfaces. Clear off countertops, shelves, desks, and other flat surfaces that have collected “things” over time. Get rid of old mail and magazines. Put away small appliances that you don’t use very often. Think to yourself “is this really the best place for this?” Using that motto will allow you to declutter with ease.

    3. Don’t clear everything! You shouldn’t be afraid to keep a few things on the counter. You likely aren’t a perfect minimalist and there’s nothing wrong with that. Keep out the things you’ll use often like a coffee maker or hand soap. Make it your goal to free flat surfaces from most of the clutter. Clean and organize your drawers and cabinets so you have a place to store your counter-cluttering items. Only keep your frequently used, essential small appliances and items on your countertops and store or donate the rest.

    4. Store like items together. As you go through your home, organize and store like items together. Store candlesticks, napkin rings, and fancy cloth napkins together to make nice Sunday dinners and holidays a breeze. Or store all your jewelry, hats, scarves, and other accessories together so you can easily grab one on your way out without searching through all your belongings to find what you want. Not only will you know exactly where the item you’re looking for is the next time you need it, but you’ll also reduce some of those little frustrations in life.

There you have it, our ultimate spring cleaning guide. Tackle it over the next few weeks or roll up those sleeves, dive in, and knock it all out in a weekend. Your home and sanity will thank you for it.
