  • DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe + Tutorial

    February 01, 2018 2 min read

Dry shampoo is a complete lifesaver for anyone who needs a little extra time in the mornings. It freshens up oily or flat hair and gives it that “between wash” boost of volume. Store bought dry shampoos are convenient, but it can be difficult to find one that works well with your hair, not to mention expensive! Make your own instead! DIY dry shampoo can easily be made for just a few dollars, so not only will you save time in the morning, but you’ll also save yourself a lot of money!

    DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe

    What you’ll need:

    • ¼ cup baking soda
    • ¼ cup corn Starch
    • Jar w/ makeup brush or spice shaker
    • Recommended: 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (try lavender or citrus)
    • Optional: add 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (add more to darken further)

    Now you’re ready to begin!

Start by combining baking soda and cornstarch in a medium-sized bowl. Next, stir in essential oil drops until fragrant.

If desired, add cocoa powder to darken, and simply add more baking soda to lighten your powder becomes too dark. Finally, stir to combine and transfer to your jar or shaker.

    How to Use Dry Shampoo

how to use homemade dry shampoo
    • If you’re using a jar and a makeup brush, dip your makeup brush into the dry shampoo and tap on the side to get rid of some of the excess powder.
    • Section out your hair and apply dry shampoo to the roots of each section. Continue to do this until you’ve dusted all your roots with dry shampoo.
    • Your roots may look lighter than your hair color, but don’t worry! Let the powder sit on your hair for 3-5 minutes before brushing out.
    • Your hair should be left looking less oily and more voluminous. Style as usual or check out our post on fast and easy hairstyles for the morning.

Not only is dry shampoo going to save you time and money, but it will also save your hair. Fewer washes means less heat styling and less damaged hair. Using dry shampoo will also help your hair retain moisture and healthy oils, as well as preserve your colored hair by washing it less. What are your tips and tricks for going longer between washes?
