It can be difficult to navigate ways to be there for individuals who have endured trials like losing their child; but it's just as important to know what not to say. Here are a few examples that will hopefully expand your thinking around this topic.
Don't ignore the fact that it happened. This will make them feel like their feelings aren't valid. Like you don't care. It happened to them, so ask them how they're feeling today. If they want to share, they will.
This can be extremely unhelpful and even problematic at times. Stay away from sentences that start with "at least".
They are grateful for the time they had together, but that doesn't take away from the immense pain they are likely feeling right now. Saying this takes away from the tragedy that they are going through.
By saying this, you're implying that their sadness will be over once time passes.Grief over the loss of a child doesn't go away. It stays with someone for the rest of their life.
If there has ever been a time for them to break down, it's now. They don't have to be strong right now, so telling them to be strong will not help.
Just be a listening ear for this person in your life. They don't need advice, they just need you to listen.
