  • 10 Ways to Be More Sustainable

    February 26, 2021 3 min read

An important goal we can all make for 2021 is to produce less waste. Sustainability is so important in our modern world, and it's becoming easier to become waste-free every day! Here at Bella Ella, we strive to do our part. Whether it's investing in a reusable water bottle, donating clothing, or recycling, your actions will make a difference.

    Recycle

    Recycled bottle

Recycling is one of the easiest ways to make a difference. Invest in a recycling bin, and sort out your papers and plastics. In the US, only 23% of plastic water bottles are recycled - let's do our part!

    Donate or Resell

I don't know about you, but warm weather always get me in the spring cleaning mood. Instead of throwing away old clothes or shoving them to the back of your closet, donate or resell! These days, it's so easy to donate to your local thrift stores, but if that's not your style, resell! There are so many secondhand apps that make this process fun and easy, and you can pocket a little extra cash.

    No More Single Use

Emotional support water bottle, anyone? I carry my reusable water bottle with me everywhere, and I absolutely love it! While it can sometimes be easier to just grab a plastic water bottle and go, investing in a reusable one can make a huge difference. 38 billion water bottles end up in US landfills every year - that's around 2 million tons! Make the switch - the planet will thank you.

    Reusable Grocery Bags

While plastic bags are definitely the cheapest to manufacture, they cause the most damage to the environment. Luckily, there are so many ways to replace them! Whether you use a tote for groceries or bring a mesh bag for produce, you can save so much plastic.

    Source Food Locally

    farmer's market

Who doesn't love a farmer's market? Many of us don't think about is where our food comes from, and what it takes to get to our tables. If possible, sourcing local foods is the most eco-friendly option, and it can be so fun! Round up some girlfriends and spend your next Saturday morning picking out fresh produce.

    Opt for Reusable Feminine Products

    feminine products

Menstrual cups are becoming more and more popular, and they are an incredible way to reduce waste. They are made to last for years, which isn't bad for your wallet either. If menstrual cups aren't an option for you, try out some period underwear! Knix offers a great selection of super absorbent, reusable underwear that will keep you leak-free.

    Compost

    compost

If you have a garden of your own, compost! Composting is an easy way to repurpose food waste, and your plants will thank you. Composting creates nutrient-rich soil that will feed your garden exactly what it needs. Not sure where to start? Follow this easy composting guide.

    Keep a Reusable Straw Handy

    reusable straws

Plastic straws are not recyclable and pose a huge threat to marine life. Many restaurants have already made the switch to paper straws, or have removed them completely. So if you love a straw in your midday soda as much as I do, invest in a pack of reusable straws! There are so many different kinds to choose from, from metal to silicone to glass. Find what works for you and make a difference!

    Buy Items in Bulk

We all know those brands that go a little overboard with packaging. The products may look pretty, but at what cost? Buying in bulk guarantees less packaging, and in the long run, just one person's effort can make a huge difference. You'll save money, too!

    Invest in Refillable Products

    hand washing

We all have essential products that we can't go without, like shampoo, soap, surface cleaners, etc. Why not refill? So many brands are hopping on the refillable bandwagon, and sell tablets or pouches of their product to fill your existing containers. Buy containers that match your aesthetic and your essential products will never go out of style.

This year, let's make a commitment to do our part in taking care of our planet. If you have more ideas on how to be sustainable, share in the comments below!
