  • How to Dress For Your Body Shape

    November 30, 2021 3 min read

The best tool you have to work with is your figure! Find the perfect outfit that flatters you and your shape. Every body type and shape is unique, so embrace yours! Dress around it, and you're sure to find the best outfits to suit your style. Determine which body shape best describes you, and find the outfits that best highlight all your features.

    Round Body Shape

Also known as the apple body shape, this body shape is defined by an upper body that is bigger than the lower body, no defined waist, slim hips, broad shoulders and great legs. With a round body shape, you can opt for a scoop or v-neck top which is always flattering. Or, to create a more defined waist, find a wrap, faux-wrap or ruched-side tops to cinch in that waist! For a more formal look with the upcoming holiday season, slim-fit dresses that fall above the knee, or flared skirts matched with a slimming top will create the perfect balance and accentuate your shape.

    Pear Body Shape

A pear, or triangle shaped body is when your lower half is wider than your top half. Meaning wider hips and thighs. To accessorize this body shape, aim for drawing attention to your upper half, through bright colors, prints, and wide necklines (boat or sweetheart). For a more formal look, a-line skirts will emphasize a small waist and fall away from your hips, to streamline your bottom half. Pair a patterned a-line skirt with a simple wide neckline top to create a perfectly balanced silhouette.

    Inverted Triangle Body Shape

An inverted triangle body shape is when your top half is typically larger than your bottom, and your shoulders broader than your hips. There is not much definition between your hips and waist. Add volume to your bottom part through wide-leg trousers or flare pants in bright or light colors to draw the attention to your legs. For the perfect holiday dress, you can opt for a-line dresses or add some texture on the bottom half with a pleated-bottom dress.

    Rectangular Body Shape

A rectangle body shape is characterized with equal bust, waist and hip measurements. The underdefined waistline and straight shoulder line and hips make it appear as though the body shape is of a rectangle. With this body shape, your focus is to create the illusion of a waist through belts, or mid-to-high-waisted bottoms to really draw eyes into your waist. Fit and flare dresses are the most flattering for this figure, to create the image of a defined waist.

    Hourglass Body Shape

An hourglass shape is identified by equal hip and shoulder measurements, with a well defined, and cinched waist. Even with this body shape, you want to draw attention to the slimmest part of your body. Avoid shapeless or baggy clothes, as they can hide your frame. Instead, find a fitted and tapered waist detail dress or top to hug your curves. You could even rock a mini skirt matched with a simple top with a boat or scoop neck to tone down your top half (as hourglass body types typically come with a more busty figure.) Or spice it up with a fun, flirty jumpsuit to stand out from the crowd.
